Full-On SMF Posts: 77 Location: Hull | In a recent interview with jay jay he stated that new material just doesn't make any money so it's not viable! Just wondered if anyone knows how much artists earn from online music players like spotify and last.fm etc. and whether this emerging media means they may start to earn more from new recordings?

Nearly A Band Member Posts: 772 | I think every case would be viewed differently according to the Artists ability to sell records. I.E. Rolling Stones would get alot more royalties than TS per say..IMO Tons of lawyers and red tape I'm sure.. SMFF

Record Company Good Guy Posts: 575 | In the metal world, digital sales only account for 20-25% of all music sales. Streaming services like Spotify pay a ridiculously low per track rate but the hope is that in the future there are so many people streaming music that it makes a difference. I realize everyone thinks record companies are evil (some are) and they screw bands (some do) but without them it will be nearly impossible for bands to survive.

Full-On SMF Posts: 77 Location: Hull | We listen to spotify at work and I've added twisted sister tracks and some desperado and dee's solo stuff! Feels like I'm helping the cause as well as introducing my colleagues to new music! I had a sneaking suspicion though that the returns would be low for the artiste!

Full-On SMF Posts: 77 Location: Hull | Just read a story about this on the BBC website, the average artiste gets paid £0.002 per listen! Don't know what that equates to in dollars, but you'd have to have a lot of plays to become rich!!
