10 Best Halloween Horror Rock Songs

Halloween is almost here and it’s not too late to put together a mix of horror rock music to celebrate our most frightful holiday. These are some of my favorites in no particular order.
Tubular Bells by Van Helsing’s Curse
Dee Snider of Twisted Sister fame tried to make a Halloween version of Trans-Siberian Orchestra but it never really got off the ground. This metallic rendering of the song made famous by The Exorcist is killer and shows this project which so far has had no follow up had potential.
Halloween by Helloween
This 1987 power metal classic clocks in at more than 13 minutes and is the epic of all Halloween songs. Featuring soaring vocals by Michael Kiske, an impeccable composition by the power metal genre’s architect, Kai Hansen and a fun yet dark holiday vibe. Any song that manages to mention the Peanuts and reference The Great Pumpkin is alright by me.
Steven by Alice Cooper
This is perhaps the shock rock genius’s creepiest song and one that shows why he is and always will be the best at this kind of thing. The piano driven song which came out in 1975 sounds like it could have been an influence on John Carpenter’s scoring style by the way. Listen closely.
Dig Up Her Bones by The Misfits
Purists will scream that anything not performed by Danzig is not Misfits but I dare you to listen to this song without screaming the chorus and bobbing your head. Catchy, with cool lyrics and great vocals by Michale Graves make this song a favorite. Plus, the production is actually listenable a trait not shared by the low budget Danzig-era recordings, no matter how cool the songs were.
Thriller by Michael Jackson
Sure, Michael is creepy in a bad way but who can deny the coolness of this song? Plus, the narration at the end by none other than the horror icon of horror icons: Vincent Price is priceless. No pun intended.
All Hallow’s Eve by Type O Negative
This song from their underrated World Coming Down CD isn’t widely known since it was never released as a single but it nails the whole vibe of Halloween better than anything the drab four have down before or sense.
The Ghost of Vincent Price by Wednesday13
Former Murderdolls singer Wednesday13 is the modern king of fun horror music taking his cues from 80s glam and punk. This song from this first solo CD Transylvania 90210 is super cool, super catchy and makes you feel as if you were stuck in one of Price’s films.
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
If you want a song that will send chills down your spine and satisfy all of your metal cravings, this is it. This is the first heavy metal song ever written and is a template for dark, brooding, atmospheric music.
Sleepless Nights by King Diamond
To say the King and I have differing viewpoints on life would be a huge understatement but talent is talent and he no doubt the master of conceptual metallic creepiness. This song from his Conspiracy CD features King’s diverse vocals ranging from the low of his natural range to the peak of his piercing falsetto. It’s a fan favorite and for good reason. This is a great song.
Scared by Dangerous Toys
A tribute to Alice Cooper penned by Toy’s awesome frontman Jason McMaster, this song offers the best of 80s hard rock with enough melody to sing along and crunch to bang your head. If you haven’t seen the video, check it out on youtube. It’s great.
