Rock is dead…….
Twisted Sister’s Jay Jay French reckons hard rock & metal are marginalised in favour of rap & hip-hop and that making a new record is ‘pointless’

RIP

Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French reckons rock stars have been replaced as kid’s musical idols by hip-hop and dance musicians – and he says rock is all but dead on both sides of the Atlantic.

French also believes it is the older generation who are keeping rock music alive but he hopes it is just a temporary cycle for the genre.
In an interview with Rockoverdose.gr in Greece he said:

“In the United States it’s dead. There are almost no rock bands anymore on the charts if you look. Foo Fighters maybe once in a while but the fact is the heavy rock scene is completely dead from a commercial stance as the charts are all dance music.

“And in Europe too for that matter but it is important to understand that even though it is not current to the young people it is a huge business to millions of fans around the world who still love it and tend to be a bit older.

“We are looking at a changing landscape right now. Will it come back again? It may but it’s very much marginalised right now which is a shame. The rock star image that one had 10 to 30 years ago is not the image anymore. People are seeing the hip-hop and dance artist adopting these sorts of lifestyles and projecting them around the world as some sort of a symbol.

“The symbol of Keith Richards or Axl Rose or Led Zeppelin or of excess and all that on the rock side is almost invisible at this point. So yes the Rolling Stones, ACDC or Judas Priest can still go on tour and Twisted Sister can go on tour and be more popular than we’ve ever been but young people who listen to new music? It’s not that popular just now and I think that’s just the cycle we are going through.”

Twisted Sister are back on the road this year for a select handful of shows but French warns fans not to expect any new material from the band as he feels they don’t want it – or are willing to pay for it. He continued:

“There are no plans to record anything new although we are bringing out a bunch of songs we haven’t played in a while so the hardcore fan will hear stuff they haven’t heard us play more ‘Under the Blade.’

“We don’t really see a reason why to record. When a new one comes out you maybe play one song from it because nobody cares so it’s pointless. I’d rather play what everybody wants to hear than play something they are not familiar with.

“That just happens to be the way the situation is these days. It doesn’t pay and nobody buys the material anyway so it doesn’t make any sense to do it. Most bands are never honest enough to say it and want to say they are still making new material but nobody really cares.

“But we are very proud of being able to play what we play and being one of the best live bands in the world and we enjoy playing our hits for our fans.”

Although the band have no plans to record any new tracks they will be making a series or previously forgotten and unreleased tracks from their early back catalogue available this summer with a series of special edition CDs and DVDs. French adds:

“The original recording of ‘Under the Blade’ that was done with Secret Records has never been remastered correctly and we finally got hold of the master tapes to remaster them and we were able to connect them with a very famous live performance from 1982 – Live at Reading – so it is a double package with a CD and DVD.

“It is very important stuff. The DVD is a legendary show where Lemmy, Fast Eddie and Pete Way came on stage with us at the end and people say that show was one of the reasons the band was as successful in Europe but no one ever saw that show so we found a copy of it and made a package for the fans and it sounds the best it’s ever sounded.

“We also have another double DVD package coming out in the summer time and that’s going to have a show called ‘Live at North Stage’ which was one of our last shows we were playing in the New York area before we were signed to our record deal and had a lot of different songs people hadn’t heard before but had heard about.

“And there is the reunion show, the ‘New York Steel’ show, and that’s going to be packaged together and called ‘Before and After.’ So we’re looking forward to that and it gives us more material to have out there when we perform.

“What people appreciate about Twisted Sister is that there are very, very few bands left that play in the original classic line-up and we’re proud that all five members are playing.

“I think what happens is you become a legend and people always say ‘Oh it’s not the way it used to be, they used to have different people.’

“And I can say you get the best there is because we are the best there is and you get the classic line-up so people can expect a great show.”

The ‘Live at North Stage’ show combined with the ‘New York Steel’ show sounds like an amazing DVD package, can't wait to get it.
The remastered Under the Blade combined with the Reading concert is another great combination. I always wanted to see taht entire show.
Looking forward to May 31

I completely agree with Jay Jay. And maybe I am in the minority of fans here but I've had no interest in them releasing a new album. And I know we all as individuals feel like we're the world's #1 SMF, but shit, yeah, I can't imagine being a bigger fan of them than I already am. It's just my gut feeling just tells me a new album wouldn't have that "Twisted" edge to it(especially in the songwriting department) and I'd rather not have something that wouldn't live up to expectations. At their best, Twisted was a legitimately angry bunch of dudes with something to prove to the world. They are way too happy to write a Twisted album. And good for them!

Definitely lookin forward to the packages they are releasing tho!

I tend to agree that a new album may just miss the mark and in the song writing department may not be what TS were all about in the day. I have though enjoyed listening to tracks like 'Tear it Loose' again recently live and did enjoy the new track '30'
