Hi,

Just got to PC, here are some links from Download.

Interview:-

Opening Number with intro:-

It was great to meet up with Dave, Funtazia, and hang out for the day and to see Paul Dee and Dan. Paul, I hope all is OK with your daughter. Thanks Dave for the lift in and out, it was great to catch up and talk all things Twisted.

Twisted blew the place apart, the sound was great and although the set was short, just 55 minutes, the guys had the place moving like no-one else on the bill. They just do it time and time again. Jay Jay was working the entire stage, including narrow strips either side of the stage, a Health and Safety Managers nightmare . The boys were really tight, although no Pinkburst or Bullseye guitars to be seen, would love to know why? Real shame that "The Price" and "The Fire" were dropped but something had to be missed.

I would love to think that the guys would play INGUN tomorrow but sadly I know they won't. . How about playing it at the soundcheck and letting the SMF's from the Slamboard in, password INGUN. If you need an extra guitarist for WNGTI tomorrow you need just ask , I will be in London all day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lastly, I was so pleased that my youngest was able to go as his operation was put back until next week. I had hoped that we might get backstage or that there would be a meet and greet but it was not to be this time. All the same it was great to see him next to me pumping his arm and singing his heart out, the new wave of SMF's is already with us.

I will leave the full setlist and road report to Funtazia, looking forward to the awards show tomorrow and meeting up with some SMF's again.

OK OK - so we have lots of impatient SMF's who want to know the setlist for Download - I think the one thing this delay has done is show us (even more) how much we should appreciate Armadillo and his dedication at bringing us the Road reports in such a timely manner (and often at great personal financial expence to himself).

Well I was fortunate enough to have been at Donington on Saturday - but then had to have family time on Sunday before going to work Monday and then heading for London for Metal Hammer Awards yesterday - and then back to work today - so this is the first opportunity I have had to write anything here..........trouble is I've forgotten it all!!! - I'm just not professional enough to use a notepad.

So - do you want this Armadillo style - or shall I jump straight in? Well, given that it is only 4 weeks until we get a proper full blown Armadillo Road Report from the Greece shows I'll get you warmed up and give you some of the info maybe you aren't interested in!!!! So to put the show in context Twisted were playing on the Second Stage of Download Festival on the second of three days. The weather was warm at times but quite cloudy and overcast at others - giving us just a little shower after Twisted finished. Playing on the bill immediately before Twisted were Cheap Tick, Mr Big, Dio Disciples, Clutch, Dan Reed etc - most bands played around a 30 minute set - Twisted were given 55 minutes to play - although given 'Long Way' intro lasts 5 minutes they only had 50 minutes to play. Twisted played second on the bill - with only Alice Cooper following them onto the Second stage. At the same time as Twisted were playing Angelfold Seven were playing on the Main Stage with Sevendust playing on the third stage. This was the first time Twisted were back at Donington since playing there 28 years ago at 1983 Monster of Rock festivals.

Twisted took to the stage at 7.40pm starting with Long Way ... intro (no surprises there). The setlist included:-
What You Don't Know
The Kids Are Back
Under The Blade
Captain Howdy (these first 4 were correct order - what follows may not be in correct order)
You Can't Stop Rock 'n'Roll
We're Not Gonna Take It (with Jay Jay intro - inc pop at Simon Cowell - also inc I Wanna Fuck line)
Burn In Hell
I Am I'm Me (thanking UK for giving them their career)
I Wanna Rock

So - no Shoot 'em Down, Stay Hungry, The Price Smf etc due to time restrictions.

As Richard said, Twisted certainly got the, sizable, crowd going - in fact they were the only band I saw the whole day that seemed to have any real crowd interaction. They were able to engage the largest crowd for the whole of their set (it would be true to say that Alice dew a bigger crowd - but half way through this had shrank to same size that Twisted had - but the amount of crowd that were 'fully into it' was not as big as Twisted had.

It was great spending the day with Richard and his son Phillip (I hope all goes well next week Phillip) - it's amazing how much time you can pass just talking all things Twisted. I also appreciated his extra muscle strength getting me up those steep grassy fields - if it wasn't for his help I may have had to stick with System Of The Down, Angelfold Seven etc - none of which I know/enjoy but they were on the main stage at the BOTTOM of the hill!! It was also good seeing Dan and Paul Dee - shame neither were able to make it to London.

To sum it up - Twisted were certainly THE band of the day - showing just how professional they are - their playing was great and Dee's voice just gets continually better. It was great to see Twisted back in the UK again - (and I fear this may be their last visit here) - but I truely miss a full Twisted show.

You may have spotted my mistake above (apart from the probable numerous spelling mistakes) I Wanna Fuck line of course occurs in I Wanna Rock not WNGTI !!!!

Dave,

It was an honor to be of some small help at the festival and catching up was great fun.

Thanks Dave and Terry for the thumbs up regarding Philip. I cant say that it is not a worry, its just horrendous and the wait seems like an eternity. I just wish I could to take the hit and have him not have to go through with the operation.

Thanks, Richard UK SMF

Great review of TS @ Download
Makes you proud to be an SMF

Download Festival 2011
Donington Park

This year’s Download Festival was probably one of the least fondly talked about line-ups the festival has seen, with harsh criticisms over scheduling and headlining acts being splurged all over the internet in the approaching weeks. That being said, it was a nostalgic and, although possibly unintentionally, ironic set of bands to grace the five stages sprawled over the grounds of Donnington Park Race Track which when hand-in-hand apparently create one hell of a festival.

The weekend well and truly started with the highly anticipated set from nu-metal Gods Korn, who played the 2nd Stage on the festival’s opening day. Sharing a line-up with one of their primary influences (Biohazard, who played main stage on the Sunday), Korn were expected to provide a selection of new and ‘classic’ material with their usual off-beat energy. Jonathan Davis appeared in his trademark kilt and using his ‘naked girl’ microphone and thankfully not a dub-step remix in sight. Technical difficulties and poor mixing made Davis’ vocals barely distinguishable amongst the crowds cheering, however the music was untarnished throughout. Luckily this was fixed by the time the band reached their third track, and one of their best known songs ‘Hear to Stay’, however by this time it seemed the damage was done, as a noticeable amount of the crowd had chosen to vacate.

The widely expected tragedy of Danzig’s Pepsi stage performance was thankfully avoided as ‘Satan’s Child’ (fyi, it’s one of his records) himself responded to adoration pouring from the crowd with his own breed of furious energy. Playing a large selection of new material and then the obvious classics, Danzig and co strutted around stage with unadulterated arrogance which was fed at the end of every track by a tent full of worshippers. The set itself wasn’t anything extraordinary with the music being played to record standard. Vocally Danzig was strong and didn’t miss a note, and the same goes for the band. It seems a personality can change the tone of a set from pretty good to something unrepeatable by another.

Debatably, the same can’t be said for Swedish newcomers Ghost. The incredibly hyped caped ensemble were rigid and seemed to be incredibly choreographed. The music was literally just played, as the band themselves almost seemed disinterested in the enjoyment of the crowd. Interaction was non-existent with those who were obviously baffled by what they were seeing leaving early on. Those who did stay were entranced by what stood before them; a well rehearsed band with stage presence that doesn’t transfer from their usual venues to a festival tent.

Twisted Sister show no signs of declining with age, and certainly Dee Snider shows no signs of compromising the standard of a Twisted Sister performance 35 years on from when they started. Easily the most entertaining, musically perfect and crowd engaging band at the festival, the heavy metal glam entertainer’s showcase puts that of their juniors to more than just shame. A sort of ‘heavy metal 101’ if you will. With hits like ‘Captain Howdy’, ‘We’re not gonna take it’ and ‘I wanna rock’ igniting the crowd in a sing-along, the few times the band did stop to speak, it was with the same ‘fuck the establishment’ bravado they have always carried, which just continues the pure fun to flow from song to song. Twisted Sister, Download salutes you and begs you to come back every year to follow.

With any festival like Download there are always incredibly difficult clashes to decide between. This year saw the battle of 2nd stage headliner Alice Cooper and main stage ‘top dogs’ System of a Down. Taking audience capacity, reaction and the amount of girls who got their tits out during the set into account, SOAD reigned supreme.

White sheets totally covered the main stage as the drum introduction to ‘Prison Song’ silenced the majority of the festivals attendees who stood watching. Serj Tankian’s whispering vocals increased crowd tension as everyone stood, just waiting for the guitar to kick in, the sheets to drop and the lights to go up and reveal the band most had been waiting all weekend for.

Finally visible the band appeared calm and slightly set back by the thousands of spectators who knew every word. When playing one of their most famous hits, ‘Chop Suey’, it was almost impossible to hear anything expect the screaming fans. Not a still body in sight for the majority of the set, jumping, trampling and dancing and crowd surfing seemed to be the name of the game. Considering the technicalities of a lot of the band’s music, it would be excusable for notes to have gone wrong here and there, but there is genuinely no need for that where SOAD were concerned, playing a note perfect set for the 45 minutes they entertained the masses. This headlining set is now there to be beaten by those next year and there is serious doubt that it is possible. The only question that stands, ‘Was it System of a Down and Twisted Sister alone who made this Download possibly the best in recent years?’

Totally loved the Download set. The time just flew by. Now if only one of those "15 days a year" could be a full headline club gig, somewhere like Rock city, Nottingham, things would be perfect :-)
Heres "You cant stop rock n roll" live at Download festival : http://youtu.be/BXnDEx_93es
