WTF? I mean really? What the fuck guys? What happened at hellfest? The day started bad, finding out that there was some royal fuck up with my stupid useless hotel (ever thought about staying at Quick palace in nantes? Don't it sucks and the staff are total cunts), which made me having to leave after Europe to sort things out. Got late to the festival and missed most of saxon, which didn't help my mood, but was my fault. After europe i left my second row spot, ran to the car, broke all speed limits known to mankind,, probably even purchased myself a shiny flashy picture, had some choice words for my hotel manager and rushed back to at least see half of whitesnake, or so was the plan, as a traffic jam wouldn't have that. I got increasingly more angry for missing whitesnake, as i also missed them at a festival 2 years before due to traffic. So as i settled into 5th row, about 5 mins after they had ended, i was angry, but equally happy to be there in time for ts,as i feared worst. Whilst i was plotting how to get closer i noticed that a.j. got a new drum kit. I also noticed that the still low hanging banner had some strange font and colours. I found that peculiar. When i saw that the back line and mic stands looked different and dees stand wasn't even there i got nervous. And when i saw that ts now has a keyboadplayer i freaked and asked the guy next to me whether the running order got changed. And the guy told me something i never ever wanted to hear. He told me that ts and whitesnake traded places. WTF? Do you want to tell me i drove 1200 km to a festival in france and i missed the one band which was the

The main reason for me to go. Get the fuck out of here. Who's idea was it to trade a measly (i hate shortened sets) 75 minute gig in somewhat cool sundown light against a even more measly 60 mins in broad daylight?? I checked hellfest website in the morning. I downloaded the hellfest app too. There was no mentioning of a switch.
How can it be that i'm the moron driving 1200 km to see a band and miss them?

Oh Patrick! I'm so, so sorry--that would devastate me as well. I am not privy to the details of why the switch occurred, I can only tell in my limited experience has been that the rock world is a dynamic, ever-changing, ever flexible environment. Things change rapidly, often without much notice, and many times, the band has little or no control over the exact time they play. The alleged wifi at the festival was a hot mess--I couldn't get on the net at all to post updates.

These things happen--especially at large venues. Truly, that is just a miserable experience--I tend to be a bit obsessive about getting to shows before they open...and not leaving until after TS plays.

Oh well... 'it just happens' doesn,t quite cut it. That a co-headliner gets reduced to a better afternoon slot and their showtime is cut down by 15 mins , after tickets had been sold and programs printed, isn't every day occurance. I've been to many festivals before and the only time i saw slot switches happen, was when an artist couldn't be there in time. But then they still played the same setlength. I really wonder how many people knew of the switch, as, other than in the program with the wrong schedule, i couldn't find a single schedule on site and they revamped the hellfest website.
And as i said. I didn't leave the venue by choice. I left to have a place to sleep.

@macedonian smf
Yes. It was. Hellfest indeed. I thought i was in hell.

Patrick, what you've been through is an absolute nightmare but this is a pdf I downloaded a while back when I was thinking of going to Hellfest. The headliner that cancelled was Aerosmith. They hadn't announced any dates, but a very well informed source did comfirm that they were planned as headliner for Hellfest and Graspop. That is why there were that many changes in the line-up. ZZ Top, Kiss and Aerosmith were the original headliners and this was changed to Def Leppard, Kiss and Volbeat, with ZZ Top on saturday as co headliner and Twsited and Whitesnake on friday. This let to a extremely packed friday and a very poor sunday. There were many problems this year at Hellfest and it's a shame a SMF had to become part of that misery.

Patrick, I don't want to make you're suffering worse, but I did some research and it seems that the pdf I downloaded was posted on 8 april 2013...

Yes. Aerosmith were rumoured early on, but they were out soon, at the latest as soon as def leppard got announced. That pdf isn,t helping and makes matters worse, as mine says differently, also the app, which i downloaded on friday morning says differently, as the programs, that were handed out. Also all the usual links from the hellfest site got removed, so you can't really access the other pages... but having just visited that fucking site again, i see that there is a small h that takes you to the full site... but how am i supposed to know to click on some random h?

But i realize now that everything was working against me. Me not checking out the schedule every day (although one would think it's enough to do it on the day of the show). An outdated app. A revamped site. A fucked up hotel, that demands me to check in during the evening, despite having a selfserving 24 check in safe/terminal and having previously claim it's possible to check in at other times itand an unsual downgrading from co-headliner to also-run.

Hi Patrick...again, I'm so sorry. I can only begin to imagine how frustrating and upsetting. I've come close to missing the shows twice--once when my flight was cancelled to Ft. Wayne...and most recently, when immigration wouldn't let me into Brazil and the show was barely 2 hours away.

I do not know specifics or the business side to this industry, but from what I have observed, there is a certain amount of "movement" that does occur on band running orders at these festivals, and it happens more than you know, a lot of times, the changes seem to happen very quickly--and it does always appear to be something that bands have complete control over.

I don't want to rub salt in the wounds--I know that it just plain hurts right now. (my brother once missed a concert that he spent big bucks on tickets--he read the wrong date on the ticket--he STILL can't talk about it and it's been 25 years) The locals told me that the roads are impassable during the festival--we (crew) were brought in very, very early in the day to avoid the traffic jam.

Yes. I do understand some minor bands getting shifted around earlier on, but not a co-headliner that is scheduled to play 75 99mins at 20:45 being reduced to 60 mins at 18:30 and that well after tickets went on sale (and the organization not removing all traces of the old schedule). That is a major change and shouldn't have happened. I wonder if they reduced twisted sister's fee and raised whitesnake's fee. Had i known all along it would only be 60 minutes i maybe wouldn't have done hellfest at all and settled for graspop. But despite the pain of missing them, my 3000 km trip was great and i'm looking forward to 90 mins at graspop now and sweden next month.

Wow. Reading the wrong date on the ticket?? I think i had nightmares about that one. As for the streets around the festival, that wasn't too bad. The jam was in nantes and on sat night, after korn.

Ouch - I feel your pain Patrick! That has to be the worst nightmare ever (certainly it's a fear I have every time I do a long distance trip). Enjoy this weekend!!

SIGNIFICANT TYPO...my apologies. too little sleep--too fast fingers...
What I meant to type...running order is something that it seems that most bands do NOT always have a lot of control over. Sometimes, I swear, the fans know more about the band lineups and show times than the artists do.

It's funny...when I'm in the front row, I usually know when Twisted is taking the stage down to the minutes. Working crew? I know it's time when I see the production crew head to the booth.

As for the business side--that is strictly for the management folks. My job is mostly to serve as a runner. I wouldn't know the business end of music from a carrot.

I'll take 1 hr of Twisted music over 4 hours of some other bands. Hell, it took me 5 hours of heavy freeway driving in traffic to make the benefit, and they played 8 songs. (still awesome. still worth it) Graspop is going to be insane!! I highly recommend it
