Great report. But Terry.... how could you??? I'm austrian, not german. Please.

I have posted some pictures to go along with the report here: http://www.twistedsister.com/mbbs2/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=273

And some videos.

Yeah. The Faroes were amazing. My trip started out exceptionally with having the same flight from Copenhagen as Dee (I guess I have the birds to thank for that), so we had a nice, little chat, while waiting for the baggage. Like Terry said, the nature sights on the islands are breathtaking and the open door policy also extended to the festival, as everything was so relaxed that on the afternoon of the show day I could just walk on to the festival grounds and was quite happy to see that A.J. and the crew were already there (of course, while walking towards them, I half expected someone coming from the side to tackle me to the ground, shortly before reaching them... and probably that would have happened anywhere else.... but no such thing happened here). It was cool to meet A.J. (and Terry and the crew) again. And instead of just checking out the festivalsite and continuing my sightseeing trip, I hung around to see the preparations and the soundcheck. When A.J. finally started hitting the drums I was somewhere at the end of the field and you could hear the drums echoing on the mountains on the left and right, so it truly was the sound of thunder. After I did eventually leave to continue my trip and came back later to see some Faroese acts, I quickly made it to the front row. Didn't quite expect it to be that easy, but the mood was really relaxed. The concert was great as usual, even though it all went over way to quickly. After the show I felt a bit empty. I mean, I came, saw and conquered. Another great Twisted Sister show in the front row and I had accomplished what I set out to do (and it's my last show for the time being). Usually I go home the day after, but not so this time. I still had 3 more days to go (and the Joe Lynn Turner/Eric Martin show on saturday) and while I was looking forward to that and eventually enjoyed it all, it was still... after a TS show you should just leave. There is not much to top that. I probably should have gotten there earlier, but was still recovering from the Graz (well, actually the show was in Unterpremstätten) - Trip and couldn't come earlier.

About the Sea Sheperd people, I think it's cool what they do. I couldn't do it and I'm glad someone is. I'm not sure who is in the wrong or in the right, of course, if you listen to Faroese people everything is okay and justifiable and in a way it also makes sense what they are saying, but it also makes sense what the other side is saying and really, I'd rather they wouldn't (continue doing this). I didn't really know that this practice was going on on the Faroes until I saw a documentary a couple of weeks ago. Usually I wish to see whales, but in this case I really was glad I didn't. Anyway, driving around the islands I saw many of them and on the last day, shortly before I went to the airport, I finally talked to one of them. And as it turned out the guy I was talking too and some others were approached by, judging by his description, Mark and Jay Jay to take a picture. It's a small island indeed.

Jay Jay had an interesting conversation with the Sea Shep. folks.

It went like this:
"Are the Faroe people depleting the natural resource of whales?" "No."
"Are they killing the whales for sport?" "No."
"Are they creating a disruption in the environment or the natural balance of things by killing whales?" "No."
"Are the whales they kill an endangered species or at risk of becoming an endangered species?" "No."

And that was the end of that discussion.
We talked to a lot of folks, and mostly just listened to them talk about their way of life. They only kill the whales needed for food, and only those that swim into the shallows. They kill in the most humane manner possible--yes, it's terribly bloody, but it's a whale. You can't exactly take it inside and butcher it. If we butchered cows and sheep out in the camera eye, most people probably would be horrified. They eat and use every part of the whale, and one whale can feed hundreds and hundreds of people, it's a way of life on the islands that has been around for over 1000 years. The entire way of life on the Faroe Islands revolves around two things--husbandry (Sheep) and the sea.
The people of the Faroe Islands were very respectful of the protestors, and allowed them to voice their opinions and share their viewpoints. I can't say the same of all of the protestors.

The biggest complaint we heard was regarding Pamela Anderson, who they felt was a complete outsider, unfamiliar with their way of life, coming to the islands and trying to dictate how they should live their lives.

This is just MY opinion-- the whale is part of their food chain and village survival, as well as a part of their sacred traditions. They aren't depleting a natural resource, hunting, or impacting the environment. They take what they need from the sea and give back the rest. They use every part of the whale without waste, and they kill it in the fastest, most humane way possible. I love marine life--and personally, I love whales--I would not opt to participate in killing one, but I'm also not a part of that culture. I would not tell a culture of people that have thrived for over 1000 years how they should live their lives.

The United States has a FAR WORSE track record of demolishing the environments of protected species, and our country here raises cattle, hogs and poultry in horrific conditions for the food supply slaughterhouses. Pamela would better serve her cause by protesting the conditions of the meat industry here in the U.S. and leave the ancient practices of the Faroe Islands alone.

Is the pope catholic? Of course I was there. I said half a year ago that I would be there. You just should have checked the front row.

Patrick…so sorry...I'll change the report…but didn't you used to have a handle SMFfromGermany or was that a different Patrick?

Thanks and no. That must have been someone different.

Regarding whale grinds and Sea Sheperd:

I guess the difference is that cows and sheep are not taken out of the wild. They are specifically bred and raised for the purpose of providing meat (not saying that that is pretty and not equally horrible, just pointing out the difference). It's not the same as slaughtering whales, where whole families and ponds out of the wild are decimated, after first being herded together and driven to the shore (it's not like they wait for them to come to the shore) and them having to be present and witness one after one being slaugthered (I doubt it only takes 3 minutes until every whale of the herd is dead). And there are conflicting reports on whether that has an effect on the natural balance or not. Also I doubt that in this day and age any faroese person would starve if they would stop killing whales. Before the trade with foreign countries was possible, I agree, they had to take whatever they could get and what was readily available. But nowadays that is not an issue anymore. They have a choice. And tradition is a poor excuse (I too talked to one faroese person about that and that was his point. Even though he's not personally participating in hunting whales and seemed a bit on the fence about it, he still takes the whale meat he gets. I didn't further investigate that though.) And when whales supposedly are slaughtered to feed cats and dogs then I have a bit of a problem with it.

I like I said, I can see both point of views and both sides are using the arguments that supports their position and thus I probably do not know enough about it, but going by gut feeling, I'm against it. And as for being respectful towards the supporters, I also heard different things. But I guess there are bad apples on both sides. Whatever helps the respective cause.

I love marine life--and personally, I love whales--I would not opt to participate in killing one, but I'm also not a part of that culture. I would not tell a culture of people that have thrived for over 1000 years how they should live their lives.

Well, I get your point, but by that token you could also say it's okay that the japanese and asian and african cultures continue to hunt whales and sharks, kill tigers, elephants, rhinos and so on, because it's their tradition and culture and they need these animals for food, medicine and jewelry and to survive. And because we're not part of that culture, all of us should shut up and not bother them in what they are doing. I think that's making it a bit easy.

And one major thing I forgot to add is, that the mercury level of whaleflesh is so high nowadays, that it's consumption is not even considered healthy anymore and viewed as a health risk.

Except that in many other countries, endangered species are being killed for sport--and even those for medicine, the tusks and other parts are taken, and the rest wasted. The whales being killed are not endangered, and being used for everything--meat, blubber, organs and bones--and they only kill what they need, they let the rest go back out to sea. Not unlike the buffalo here in the states. When the original inhabitants--the native tribes--hunted buffalo, they hunted what they needed, and used every part. For years and years, this went on with plentiful herds. Then along comes the settlers, who managed to kill buffalo relentlessly, with no concern for waste, and essentially killed them to the brink of extinction.

Animals raised in captivity for food face far worse and crueler conditions/lives than the whales that come into the shallows. I still choose to eat meat--although I am beginning to phase meat out of my diet more and more, based on the horrid conditions of the industry.

Pamela Anderson should stick to what she knows best. Baywatch re runs. The people and culture of the Faroe Islands has existed for over 1000 years, They don't need a ditzy celebrity who couldn't find the Faroe Islands on a map, telling them how they should live their lives. we met a man who has lived on the land, in a house, passed down thru 17 generations. It is one of the purest places I've ever seen-- many of the locals we spoke to just shrugged it off. They were quite patient with those questioning their way of life.

Well, at this point it's kinda going in circles and I can only repeat myself.

Even though it's probably handled somewhat better than all the other atrocities comitted against animals (and I recognize the points arguing for it), in this day and age it's not a need to go whale hunting anymore, but a choice. And considering the cruelty to animals and the state of the contaminated meat (when even Faroese officials issue a recommendation, that whale flesh should only be eaten once a month and not at all if you are a woman planning to have children, then you know something is up), a questionable one, more based on tradition, culture and stubborness, than on anything else. And it is simply not known, whether they are endangered or not. There are conflicting reports/not enough data.

As for ditzy appearing celebrities getting on a soap box... there are far less ditzy appearing celebrities supporting Sea Sheperd as well and there are far worse causes one could apply themselves to... if that helps.

Great part 1 report of the Faroe Island show

That certainly sounded like a fun way to spend a few days between shows. Its graet to meet nice people who open their homes and lives to others.
