An interview with Scott Ian (Anthrax) talking about why (long-time) bands should keep on making new music. I hope Dee and J.J. read this... I'm glad finally somebody from the industry says it out loud. New music makes sense, why doesn't Twisted Sister gets this? Or is there really nothing that connects them anymore, nothing that they still have to tell? I was told to let it go, but I refuse to accept that TS aren't going to make new music.

Want proof that classic bands can make music that counts? This is from the new album Blind Rage by Accept (Balls to the wall, anyone?)

The last 3 Accept albums have been great! And the last Anthrax album was excellent! There are plenty of older bands and older musicians that are still putting out great music. I love the Adrenaline Mob stuff. I have no doubt that Twisted could deliver a great new album but I do understand why they don't want to do it. A select few of the hard core fans would buy it immediately but after that, it would be pretty slow sales because people just don't buy CD's and albums like they used to. If they aren't truly inspired to do it, then it probably wouldn't be great and it's pretty clear that they just haven't had the inspiration. I'd love to hear it but I respect where they're coming from.

I know how they feel about making new music but if even nobody from this slamboard cares about it, why should they? It seems to me that for J.J. it's just something economical, making a new album. But today it's not about selling thousands of CD's. Making new music means that your band is still alive and not just a relic from the past. You can shout all you want about being the best live band and being the 5 original members and being the best of the festivals, but that's nothing that lasts in the sands of time. Or are they just going to play until festivals aren't interested in them anymore? Without new music they are doomed to fade away. To quote Neil Young; it's better to burn out than to fade away.

I don't have a problem with TS not putting out a new album, but their ticket prices have gone up and they're doing the same songs.

why does no one seem to understand
that it's more than love i need
it's so hard to keep your faith alive
when nobody else believes
oh i need someone there for me
need someone who can see
need someone to show me
ohhhh, that they are there to help me fight
if i fall, to set me right
someone there to hold the light
won't someone say
i believe in you
it's so hard to do it all yourself
fighting for your dreams alone
when the toy's upon the highest shelf
a child's tears soon become stone
oh why does no one lend a hand
why does no one understand
why i need to make a stand
ohhhh,it's so hard to carry on
when all your hope is gone
all your dreams have come undone
i need to hear
i believe in you
why won't someone say these words
are they really so absurd?
must they always go unheard?
ohhhh, if someone needed the light
i'd be there to help them fight
if they fell, i'd set them right
and then i'd say
i believe in you
won't someone say i believe in you

I realy like the newer stuff from accept, kiss, whitesnake, ratt, scorpions, W.A.S.P., ozzy, stryper, u.d.o. the list goes on and on.......except for iron maiden my favorite band, i don't care much for the stuff from the last 10 years.

depends though. forcing yourself to create something new tends to turn into a disaster. if you don't feel like doing it then don't

The festival circuit is like the old club circuit. It is having it's day and then it will dissapear. So will all the bands that are currently playing it. KISS, Priest, Maiden, Crue, Whitesnake, Motorhead etc.
In 10 years all or most of the bands will be gone due to sickness, death, irrelevance.....Is that shocking or surprising? No, that's life.
One other note. When any of your favorite bands release that new, great album and tour, maybe they play 2 songs from it. The reaction of the new material is always the worst of all the songs. You hear all the standards wrapped up in a new tour name and backdrop. I've been in this game for 40 years. all of it is marketing. TS will play until we don't. As far as ticket prices we charge by far the lowest ticket prices of any classic band that I know of and put on by far, a much better performance then any of our peers. I wonder if the fans of the bands that we blow away ever wonder why their band is nowhere as good as we are? I wonder what their slamboards say? By the way, their are so many new markets opening up around the world, and we play so rarely, we could keep going on and on....

Jay Jay,

What you say about bands playing new songs might be correct if the new album sucks, like the latest from Kiss, Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden... But it is not correct if the band just made a brilliant album like Accept, Alestorm, Carcass, Black Sabbath, Slipknot... The older songs will always be more popular just because everybody knows those songs. You need to get familiar with new material before you can sing along. And the only way to do that is by playing it live or on the radio. Machine Head refuses to play Davidian because they don't want to be linked to one song, just as Scorpions do with Wind of Change. Not everybody likes that but I think those bands are right. After a few years those new songs will become new classics. If it was up to me I would gladly remove We're not gonna take it from your setlist if that means you would play 30 or Heroes.

Hmm, sarcasm Doesn't it bother you that most people only know Twisted Sister from that song? A song that isn't representative for the rest of there music? You can't believe how many people I had to explain before Graspop that Twisted Sister wasn't a pop-rock band for wimps. If Destroyer or Burn in Hell were more known you wouldn't have that misunderstanding. Scorpions and Machine Head get away with it and they are still on top of their game in contrast to Europe and Kansas...
